Check it out:
The Cannes film festival is going on right now. I’d love to cover it someday, but for now I’ll just write about one of my favorite past winners of the Palme d’Or. See our latest group blog post on that here.
Finished with my South by Southwest 2016 coverage. I saw (only) 16 films, most of them good. I took a break from other blogging during the fest, but after today I’m back to my regular schedule. Here’s the final piece: http://www.flickchart.com/blog/ranking-the-south-by-southwest-sxsw-film-fest-part-3/
Part 2 is up! http://www.flickchart.com/blog/ranking-the-south-by-southwest-sxsw-film-fest-part-2/
My first SXSW article (not counting the preview) is up! http://www.flickchart.com/blog/ranking-the-south-by-southwest-sxsw-film-fest-part-1/
I’ve written about Smokey and the Bandit before, but I’d never seen this lifelong favorite on the big screen until now. Burt Reynolds himself was there, but went back to his hotel, I believe, after introducing the film — it was quite cold out there for an 80-year-old who isn’t in the best of health. Still, it was great to see him and hear him speak about this film that he once predicted, accurately, would one day be regarded as a minor work of art.
A very devoted fan more or less rushed the stage to kiss Burt and get an autograph and tell us about the other time she’d met him and how she owned a Trans-Am.
Today I got my press badge for the 2016 SXSW film festival. I must admit, I’m not overwhelmed by the swag — the best part of it is the bag it came in! There really isn’t any swag except a coupon for a free drink. By contrast, I got plenty of stuff at Austin Film Festival last year.
Oh well. Hopefully the movies will compensate.
In other news, Ken Adam died at the age of 95. He did the set design for the early James Bond films. They were low-ceiling, wide, shiny, modern affairs. Some of my favorites are in Thunderball. He did the war room in Dr. Strangelove, too, which has the same cavernous, minimalist, yet hi-tech aesthetic as some of the great Bond hideouts and control centers. A simple Google Image search for “Ken Adam sets” provides a good overview. Click here.
I’ll be covering the 2016 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film festival for Flickchart, and I wrote up a little preview of the first couple of days. I won’t see all of the movies I mentioned, and I’ll probably see some I didn’t expect to see, so this is mostly just a promise of more to come.
